Building a Practice Website (John, Craniosacral therapist)

by John
(London, England)

I have been in practice for about 2 years now. My friends suggest that I need a website for my business. I must say, I'm put off by the amount of money that some people are charging for developing a website - but when I get around to it, I don't want mine to look too homemade. Do you think having a website will increase my level of business?

Do I think having a website will increase your level of business?

I think that having people calling you on the phone with enquiries and making bookings will increase your level of business!

So - if your website has been designed and built to achieve this, and the results can be measured - then yes, it might work.

However - I believe that over 90% of therapists websites are a waste of money and time when it comes to generating business. The reason for this is simple - they wern't built to increase business! They were built to look nice, generate a nice healthy fee for a web designer and to make the therapist (and their friends and family) feel good when they look at it.

Most sites exist in a desert with little or no "traffic". They are invisible to search engines such as google.

Say you want a website to generate at least 4 "hot enquiries" every week (someone from your locale who is almost ready to make a booking with you). Now - at the very least - take this requirement to the web designer you are considering and see whay they say. See what kind of references they can give - where they made this magic happen elsewhere.

A website is not a static vanity project - it is a lead/booking-generating machine for your practice. So, be sure to state up front what you want your "machine" to do before you go about designing and building it.

Until you have done that - I suggest that you do not waste your time. Once you have done that, you will quickly see where others intend to waste your time!
Good Luck, Mike.

Strong words
by: Steve

Wow - they are some strong words about therapist websites. If they are so useless, then why are so many people doing them? That said, I do have my own site - but it doesn't generate much business! I must get onto that web designer of mine!
