What are some of the best approaches available for Fertility Treatment today?
While many couples conceive without difficulty - things are not so easy for millions of couples around the world. Why do some couples have a problem conceiving while others don’t? This question is asked every day by couples struggling to have a child and the answers aren’t always clear.
According to the international “Assisted Conception Taskforce” , one in every six couples between the ages of 15-44 worldwide experience difficulties conceiving and carrying a baby to full-term. In Ireland the number is now approaching one in five. Infertility affects women and men equally. Finding out the cause early can help couples fix the problem and hopefully conceive - but at least 30% of the time, doctors cannot find a reason, and a couple is left with only questions.
Reasons for infertility on the female side can be complicated as her body needs to release an egg as well as carry a baby to term. Other inhibiting reasons include:
That’s a long list!
Many couples decide on specialist medical help if they continue to experience fertility problems – typically after 12 months of trying to conceive.
Traditional fertility treatments include IVF and IUI. These interventions can place a lot of stress on couples due to hormonal changes, financial burden and the separation from the “experience” of creating a child together for the couple if IVF is used. Assisted fertility treatments are very costly - and that is just for one round of IVF - many couples may try it 2 or 3 times.
When it comes to fertility treatment, there are many medical interventions available to couples - my main reason for writing this article is to illustrate the benefits of preceding or combining these traditional medical treatments with Craniosacral Therapy. By using Craniosacral Therapy - a natural, safe, non-invasive and relaxing treatment - you are enhancing your body’s ability to perform at its best. Put simply, you are improving your prospect of a successful pregnancy.
So what options are available for couples who are looking for an optimal approach for fertility treatment?
Why not combine the best of both worlds? Use the best medical assistance to aid conception AND also use a complementary therapy to enhance the natural ability of your body to nurture a baby.
Complementary treatments such as Craniosacral Therapy, acupuncture, nutrition, reflexology and yoga are becoming common to help fertility in a safe, cost effective, less stressful manner as well as having few side effects. Couples often feel empowered when using a more natural approach in tandem with a formal medical approach.
In my own craniosacral clinic at Elmwood Medical Centre, “mums to be” arrive prior, during and after conception to experience the benefits of craniosacral therapy
The following are some reasons why Craniosacral therapy can be very beneficial for treating infertility:
Anne came for Craniosacral therapy as she was beginning her second round of IVF. She was anxious about the process a second time around and wanted to optimise her chances of conceiving.
She had read about the structural benefits of the therapy in aligning the pelvis. She felt this was what she needed after having an accident which left her with lower back pain and a series of abdominal surgeries that left her with internal scarring. She also expressed the need to do something proactive to help her body prepare to be the best home possible for her baby!
Using the gentle techniques of Craniosacral Therapy over the following weeks, we worked to correct Anne’s spine and head. The finger pressure used is just 5grams along the spinal column and over the cranium. This allows the body to adjust itself safely into the correct position. I explained that correct alignment aids blood flow to the endometrium helping the embryo to grow.
Continuing to work with this light touch, we reduced the facial restrictions and eliminated tension patterns over the uterus. Anne remarked that this felt like an elastic band loosening and she was aware of slight shifting of her hips and tail bone. I further explained that this release in facial restriction would also reduce the adhesions under her scars allowing better function within the pelvic area. Throughout the treatment she was relaxed and at times she fell asleep.
Anne went on to deliver a baby girl who came back to the clinic for her first craniosacral treatment at two weeks old!
In summary, Craniosacral Therapy is a great fertility treatment to start with as it is safe, effective, non-invasive and cost effective.
If you are trying to get pregnant and want to assist your body in preparing for pregnancy and birth then give your body the gift of for craniosacral therapy.
