TMJ Treatment: CranioSacral Therapy to relieve TMJ Symptoms.
TMJ treatment needs to be approached from a number of aspects.
TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder - that’s the joint that opens and closes your jaw) and stress tend to go hand in hand. The association is one of "chicken and egg"...
...but which comes first?...
Let’s look at it this way. You have a stressful day which causes your chewing muscles to tighten which in turn upsets the trigeminal nerve in your face...
...sparking the "flight and fright" system in the body...
... activating the sympathetic nervous system causing the jaw to tense which then tightens the chewing muscles ... and on it goes.
Stopping of the teeth grinding while you're asleep.
And most importantly allow your body to relax.
Anne's Story. Anne came to see me as she was suffering from neck pain and headaches. She was recently divorced, had two young children and worked part time.
She had visited her dentist who fitted her with a splint. This splint silenced the grinding but did not reduce the pain.
She had been prescribed muscle relaxants by her doctor to ease her radiating facial pain.
When I tuned in to Anne’s CranioSacral system I was drawn to a restriction on her left side especially around her shoulder. She explained that she had fallen awkwardly and pulled ligaments there a few years back.
Releasing this area allowed the neck and whole body to stretch and lengthen. Her headaches diminished following the next few treatments as we continued to release the muscles and bones in the head and face.
Listening to her body, Anne became aware of the stress triggers in her life that caused this crippling tension to return. To maintain a sense of calm between treatments she found a relaxation CD that she listened to each evening and I taught her a simple self-help technique to relax her jaw.
Anne’s life is still stressful but now she is aware of how this affects her body and takes action before the cycle of stress starts up again. She returns for CranioSacral Therapy when she feels her jaw tighten or the circle of pain return.
